Sakamoto Ryouma, known as Ryouma Sakamoto in the localization, is a possible main protagonist in Hakuōki: Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms, as well as one of Chizuru's potential love interests.

Personality Edit

Sakamoto has a carefree and easygoing attitude, but can quickly become serious if given a reason to do so. After he is first encountered, Saito observes that although he appears relaxed, he does not let his guard down around strangers. Sakamoto is also a skilled talker, capable of thinking on his feet in complicated situations and twisting the truth to his advantage if necessary.

Background Edit

Sakamoto Ryouma is based on the historical figure of the same name. He is a ronin who is responsible for negotiating an alliance between the Satsuma and Choshu in an effort to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate. Although he is a samurai from Tosa, he left the service of his domain to pursue his own agenda. He established the Kameyama Company in Nagasaki and serves as the leader of the Kaientai. At some point, he helped guard the Choshu warrior Takasugi Shinsaku and became acquainted with the demon Shiranui Kyo in so doing.

Sakamoto has progressive views that borrow from the West, and believes that the Japanese government should become more like a democracy. Unfortunately, his controversial ideals have garnered him animosity from several other factions on both sides of the war, including the Shinsengumi and the Mimawarigumi.

Trivia Edit

  • Sakamoto is the only character introduced in Hakuōki: Kyoto Winds that is also mentioned in the original games, as Harada is blamed for his assassination.
    • However, his given name is transliterated as "Ryoma" instead of "Ryouma".
  • Sakamoto first appeared in Urakata Hakuōki and retains many similarities to his original design.
  • Sakamoto tells Chizuru that one of his older sisters' names is Otome and that she can "read, write, fence, do it all", possibly a reference to the multitalented heroines of otome games. He also tells her that his eldest sister's name is the same as the name the player input for Chizuru.
  • Though Sakamoto carries two swords at his side, he never uses either of them.
